Viking Range is known primarily for a groundbreaking appliance that combines the best features of commercial and residential ranges. Founded in 1986 in Greenwood, Miss., by native son Fred Carl Jr., the company employs more than 1,000 local residents and has annual sales of about $300 million.
Jason and Rodney Carr hate to raise their prices. Their Gardena, Calif.-based distributor of curtains and home fabrics, Softline Home Fashions, usually keeps its costs low by sourcing materials overseas: 100% of their raw goods and 80% of their finished products come from China. But recently, China hasn't paid off the way it used to. In the past five months, the Carrs have seen their manufacturing expenses rise 20%.
"Enjoy the ride," yelled Carroll Shelby, the racing and performance-car legend, as he popped a wheelie "Hi-ho, Silver" style in his scooter-wheelchair. At 84, despite a shopping list of health challenges, he shows few signs of slowing down. He has a multiyear deal with Ford to create vehicles, including the company's latest muscle car, the Shelby GT500 Mustang. It's like 1965 all over again.
