Defense chiefs from Japan and China met in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Monday, the first such meeting since a Chinese boat captain was arrested in disputed waters off the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, Japan's defense ministry said.
Anti-China protesters gathered Saturday in Tokyo and six other major cities in Japan to rally against what it calls an invasion of disputed islands that both claim are part of their territories.
